San Fran 2003 Sneak Preview
This section is a mess. The text remains a work in progress, but since the photos are already loaded to the server, I figure I might as well display them. I hope to spiff-up this area soon.

We hit Fisherman's Wharf the first afternoon we were in town. I'd been there before, but Art hadn't, so we geeked out in the wax museum and hit some of the touristy stores. We stumbled upon Lark in the Morning, which is easily the best musical instruments shop I've ever seen. I walked out of there with a cool flute. That night, we headed up to Mission Street to catch a screening of the Illegal Art film festival. The festival compiled about a dozen short films banned for copyright violations. The centerpiece was "Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story," which I adore. I own a really blurry bootleg on video and I had hoped that the version screened would clearer. Alas, the print they screened looked just as bad as my bootleg.

We managed to meet up with Miroslav on our second day in the Bay Area. We toured his wonderful home, ate some overpriced and somewhat nasty seafood in Oakland, then jetted across town to the Illegal Art Exhibit's wrap party, where we met up with Miroslav's roommates. The party was held in a gallery, and although the flyers claimed that "Illegal Art" would be on display, the only illegal art I detected was some funny-smelling smoke wafting from the back of the room. While the art was disappointing, the presentations on copyright laws given by the nice folks at Creative Commons were pretty interesting.

Art and I met up with Miroslav and his girlfriend in the Haight on Saturday. We goofed around in the stores, were nearly financially ruined by Amoeba Records, and we ate dinner in a snazzy Hookah bar.

After taking in a free anti-Bush mime performance in San Jose on Sunday morning, we drove up to Santa Cruz and admired the magnificent coastline.

We returned to Fisherman's Wharf on Monday to re-visit Lark in the Morning. Art almost bought a new guitar there, but since the airports weren't allowing guitars aboard planes, we decided it wasn't worth the hassle of shipping it back. We took a little boat ride around Alcatraz for the hell of it. Later, we met up with Miroslav at Brainwash.

We hit a string of smaller artsy towns during our last Bay Area day … ending up in Berkeley. There, we were led to another Amoeba store, which truly destroyed our bank account.
